Who Am I?

I am Evan M. Thompson, Editor-in-Chief, National Writer, and Athletics Writer at Sport Relay (sportrelay.com). I have covered Major League Baseball since 2019, reporting on the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2019–2023, the Colorado Rockies in 2024, and the Athletics since February 2025.

I am the author of A Complete History of the Major League Baseball Playoffs. Volume I — Pre-divisional Tiebreakers through 1976 — was published on October 15, 2021, the 33rd anniversary of the first World Series game I ever watched: Game 1 of 1988, when Kirk Gibson launched his iconic walk-off against Dennis Eckersley. Volume II — 1977–1984 — followed on September 23, 2024. My work blends historical research, narrative storytelling, and a lifelong fascination with postseason baseball.

I also host Reliever Roundup and Bullpen Bonanza, the only show dedicated entirely to relief pitching, available on YouTube and Rumble. My coverage emphasizes bullpen analytics, late-inning strategy, and the often-overlooked art of high-leverage pitching.

In addition, I am a member of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research) and a lifelong sports fanatic. My favorite teams are the Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns, Calgary Flames, and Arizona Wildcats. I also enjoy soccer. Before becoming a baseball reporter, I supported the Arizona Diamondbacks, and I was a fan of the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes during their time in Arizona.
